Laser Hair Removal

Unwanted hair can be inconvenient, embarrassing, and frustrating. Traditional hair removal methods, such as shaving, depilatory creams, waxing, and tweezing, can be messy, uncomfortable, and expensive—and the results are short-lived. We treat unwanted hair with the Lumenis LightSheer® system to help laser hair removal patients from Westfield, Springfield, Longmeadow, and Northampton, MA, and surrounding areas enjoy smooth, soft skin with medical spa-quality results that last.

What Is Lumenis LightSheer?

This hair reduction treatment uses proven diode laser technology to disable hair follicles. The diode laser device emits pulses of energy to damage the hair follicle while keeping the surrounding skin intact. At New England Dermatology & Laser Center in Massachusetts, your esthetician can customize your treatment and choose the wavelength intensity to give you a safe and comfortable experience.

Areas You Can Treat With Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can treat many areas of your body, including:

  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Under arms
  • Bikini area
  • Back
  • Legs
  • Chest

While the treatment doesn’t permanently remove all hair from the area, it dramatically decreases hair growth, with most patients returning annually for a touch-up treatment.

How Many Sessions Does Laser Hair Removal Take?

Since only hair follicles in the growth phase are affected, you won’t be able to treat all your unwanted hair in one session. During each treatment session, your esthetician treats the follicles that are in the active growth phase—roughly 20% of hair in the area. Typically, you will need 4 to 6 sessions to get the best results from your hair removal treatment.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

You should experience only minimal discomfort with laser hair removal. The LightSheer laser treatment incorporates ChillTip™ technology that keeps your skin comfortable before and after treatment. Some patients experience redness and swelling around the hair follicles immediately after the treatment, but these symptoms subside quickly.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

The ideal candidate will have darker-colored hair as the laser targets the pigment in the hair shaft. However, this treatment is a good option for all skin types. You may not be a good candidate if you have a cold sore, active skin infection, or open laceration. Make sure to disclose all health conditions to your provider before your treatment in case another med spa treatment is more appropriate for you.

How Should I Prepare for My Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Your esthetician will discuss what your need to do before your treatment to get the best results. Typically, you will need to stop shaving, waxing, or tweezing approximately 2 to 6 weeks before hair removal. You can shave the area you want to be treated a day before your laser treatment so the laser can better reach your hair follicles.
