Dermal Fillers

Our faces lose volume due to genetics, weight loss, and the natural aging process. This results in lines, laxity, and hollows in the cheeks, jawline, temples, and under the eyes. Dermal fillers can restore fullness to these areas, as well as enhance features like the nose, chin, and lips. At New England Dermatology & Laser Center, we treat patients seeking medical spa services from Springfield, Northampton, Longmeadow, and Westfield, Massachusetts, and surrounding areas.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are smooth, gel-like substances that can be injected beneath the skin to add volume and soften facial lines. Popular fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, RHA®, and BELOTERO BALANCE® are formulated with synthetic hyaluronic acid (HA)—a substance that occurs naturally in the body. RADIESSE® and Sculptra® Aesthetic work a little differently, prompting your body to produce collagen for added volume and wrinkle-smoothing.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

JUVÉDERM Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC

JUVÉDERM Ultra XC is FDA-approved for lip augmentation and can give you natural-looking results. Both fillers can soften lines around the mouth, and JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC can improve moderate to severe facial lines.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA

This long-lasting filler can add lift and volume to sunken or flattened cheeks and may last up to 2 years.

Restylane

This filler can improve moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds.

Restylane Lyft

Restylane Lyft is formulated for deeper injection and can subtly lift sagging or deflated cheeks.

RHA Collection

The RHA Collection of dermal fillers is made with a special type of hyaluronic acid called resilient hyaluronic acid (RHA) that allows the face to move naturally and retain a natural look when at rest. These are the only fillers FDA-approved for dynamic wrinkles caused by facial muscle contractions. The collection includes the lightweight RHA Redensity™, medium-weight RHA® 2 and RHA® 3, and firmer RHA® 4. Results last up to 15 months when correcting facial folds and wrinkles.

BELOTERO BALANCE

This filler is a good option to fill in deeper lines on your mid-face, such as nasolabial folds.

Collagen Stimulators

RADIESSE

RADIESSE is made of calcium hydroxylapatite spheres suspended in a gel carrier. The gel adds immediate volume, while the spheres provide a framework for new collagen production. The spheres dissolve over time, but the collagen remains.

Sculptra Aesthetic

Sculptra is made of injectable poly-L-lactic acid, which can stimulate collagen production in the body to restore lasting facial volume over several months.

When choosing a dermal filler, our skin specialists consider the formulation, your concerns, the treatment area, and the type of results you hope to achieve.

Lip Fillers

Patients seeking to augment thinning lips or enhance and hydrate their pout can explore multiple options from the JUVÉDERM family and RHA Collection.

  • JUVÉDERM Ultra, Ultra Plus, and Volbella have a smooth consistency for supple, flexible volume that can be made as subtle or as dramatic as you’d like. Depending on the specific formulation and the individual, filler can last between 6 and 18 months before needing a touch-up treatment.
  • RHA 2 and RHA 3 are great for adding and restoring lip volume, defining the edges of the lips, and allowing the lips to move naturally. RHA Redensity’s light consistency smooths out vertical lip lines without looking stiff. Results last about 12 months.

What Areas Can You Improve With Dermal Fillers?

Our specialists use dermal fillers to improve areas that lack volume, definition, or balance. Here are some common facial concerns you can treat with fillers.

  • Thinning or asymmetrical lips
  • Hollows under the eyes
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Undefined jawline
  • Hollow or flat cheeks

Fillers can also be used to refine nose shape or contours in a procedure called a nonsurgical rhinoplasty.

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

Dermal filler injections are safe if you use FDA-approved fillers administered by a skilled and experienced injector. Your injector will advise you about common side effects, such as bruising and swelling after your treatment, and how to minimize these side effects.

Are Dermal Fillers the Same As BOTOX®?

Dermal fillers and BOTOX® are both injectable treatments but work differently and treat different concerns. BOTOX relaxes tiny facial muscles to improve lines of expression or dynamic wrinkles that commonly occur on your forehead or around your eyes. You can combine these two med spa treatments to improve volume loss and soften dynamic wrinkles.

Can I Combine Dermal Fillers With Other Treatments?

As mentioned above, BOTOX is popularly used with dermal fillers as part of a “liquid facelift.” However, overall facial rejuvenation is also possible with other procedures (not just same-day combinations like BOTOX or KYBELLA®) but comprehensive skin rejuvenation packages and anti-aging regimens, including laser skin resurfacing, DiamondGlow®, or medical-grade skincare.
