Protect Your Skin

Your skin is your most loyal companion! From the day you’re born, it grows with you, changes with you, and protects you through every journey.

This Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we’re reminding you to show your skin a little extra love in the sun – so it can continue to protect you at its best.

Understanding Melanoma & Other Types of Skin Cancer

Melanoma may be one of the most well-known types of skin cancer, but it is just one of several.

And while all melanoma is skin cancer, not all skin cancer is melanoma. Melanoma specifically develops in the cells that produce pigment (melanocytes) and is more likely to spread if not detected early.

Other common types of skin cancer include:

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC):

Most common and least aggressive form of skin cancer

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC):

Common, can grow and spread to surrounding tissue if left untreated

Sun-Safe Habits

Daily sun protection is one of the most important steps you can take to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, you should:

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA/UVB protection)
  • Choose SPF 30+, depending on your level of sun exposure
  • Reapply every two hours, especially when outdoors
  • Wear sun-protective clothing

We also recommend choosing sunscreens that are:

  • water-resistant for extended outdoor activity
  • formulated for your skin type (sensitive, acne-prone, etc.)
  • easy to apply daily (consistency is key)

If you need to stock up on dermatologist-approved SPF products, our aesthetics clinic is offering 20% off all sunscreen products throughout May.

Skin Cancer Screening

If you notice any new, changing, or unusual spots on your skin, it’s important to schedule a visit with a board-certified dermatologist right away. Warning signs can include changes in size, shape, or color, as well as itching, bleeding, or sores that don’t heal.

Routine mole checks and professional skin exams play a critical role in catching skin cancer early, when it is most treatable. If you’re looking for skin cancer screening in Western MA, our team is here to provide thorough, compassionate care.

Treatment Options at New England Dermatology & Laser Center

We offer both surgical and non-surgical skin cancer treatments here at New England Dermatology & Laser Center.

Our experienced team carefully evaluates each patient to determine the most effective, personalized treatment.

Skin Cancer Excision:

Skin cancer excision is a common and effective treatment used to remove cancerous tissue along with a small margin of surrounding skin to ensure complete removal. At New England Dermatology, this in-office procedure is performed under local anesthesia, making it a safe and comfortable option for treating many types of skin cancer.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT):

Photodynamic therapy is a non-surgical skin cancer treatment that uses a light-activated solution to target and destroy pre-cancerous cells, including actinic keratosis. This treatment is ideal for patients looking to address sun damage and early-stage skin concerns while preserving healthy skin.

Mohs Surgery for Skin Cancer:

Mohs surgery is one of the most advanced and effective treatments available, offering cure rates of up to 99%. This precise, layer-by-layer technique removes cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy skin as possible, making it ideal for sensitive or visible areas. At New England Dermatology & Laser Center, our team includes two board-certified Mohs surgeons, providing patients in Western Massachusetts with expert, specialized care close to home.

Curettage and Electrodessication (ED&C):

Curettage and electrodessication is a minimally invasive skin cancer treatment used to remove basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. The procedure involves gently scraping away cancerous cells and using controlled heat to eliminate any remaining cells and prevent bleeding. It is a quick, in-office option for select cases.
