EDITORIAL REGARDING SUNSCREEN:Our Board Certified Dermatologist's response to an article that was published in the Springfield Republican Newspaper on June 1,2014 regarding the use of sunscreen.
We are dismayed to read the article, "Scorching Truth:Sunscreen May Give You Cancer" by Marilyn Preston/Energy Express in the June 1,2014 Springfield Republican, Living Section,G2.
Nothing could be further from the "truth" and we would argue that the article is misleading and a disservice to your readership. There is absolutley no evidence that the use of sunscreen causes skin cancer of any kind in humans. Furthermore; there is no evidence that Oxybenzone or Retinyl Palmitate, as ingredients in some sunscreens, are toxic to humans as alleged. The official position of the American Academy of Dermatology is that "Scientific evidence supports the benefits of sunscreen usage to minimize short and long term damage to the skin from UV radiation and outweighs any unproven claims of toxicity or human health hazard".
Review our Sun Safety Patient Information Sheet for additional suggestions on how to minimize sun damage.

- Treatments are fast, easy and performed in New England Dermatology & Laser Center's Springfield office.
- The physician or a trained health care professional will determine your optimal starting dose, then will hold the XTRAC hand piece over the affected area(s) and expose the lesions to the laser light.
- Depending on the size of the affected area, this takes only a few minutes and requires no anesthesia.
- Individuals with mild to moderate psoriasis that are unhappy with their current method of treatment or who have failed previous treatment options should consider the XTRAC Excimer Laser treatment. This includes individuals who have tried topical treatments, oral medications, injections and traditional phototherapy and have areas not responding to those treatments.
- The XTRAC Excimer Laser is perfect for active people who want fast, convenient treatment.
- If you suffer from vitiligo you are not alone. An estimated 1 to 2 million Americans have vitiligo with about half having noted some pigment loss before the age of 20. Although there is no cure, vitiligo can be treated.
